DBSubst inputs an XML format file (normally with the file extension .dbs) as the source for its configuration. Each file may contain either a single or multiple "profiles".
XML format files (like .dbs) may be conveniently displayed in some web browsers (like Firefox). The tree structure can be expanded and collapsed by clicking on plus and minus signs to the left of the nodes.
