The DB Subst module works in conjunction with an ODBC data source. This facilitates coordination of the registry entries required for SpecSrv and the the creation of HTML pages for image "wrappers" and indexes. This module is not necessary if someone wants to set all the SpecSrv settings by using Regedit and edit all the HTML pages by hand!
